چکیده

We present spectra of nine low-luminosity early-type galaxies (MB > −17.5) in the Coma cluster. The spectra, which were obtained with the Multiple Mirror Telescope and cover the spectral region 3300-5350 Å, exhibit a large variation in Balmer line strengths. In fact the line strength variation among the Coma low-luminosity galaxies is as large as that found among a sample of low-luminosity ellipticals in the Virgo cluster and lower density environments. When compared to detailed population synthesis models, the variation in Balmer line strengths among the Coma galaxies indicates a range in luminosity-weighted mean age of from ∼1 Gyr to ∼12 Gyr. The two youngest galaxies are shown to be in a post-starburst state, i.e., they are not simply former spirals whose star formation was recently terminated. Moreover, the ∼1 Gyr ages of these two youngest low-luminosity galaxies are similar to those of the brighter post-starburst galaxies in Coma.

The Fundamental Properties of Early-type Galaxies in the Coma Cluster

We report the results of a high quality spectral study of early-type galaxies within the Coma Cluster core. Stellar population analysis using Lick/IDS indices to break the age/metallicity degeneracy are presented, probing their formation history and properties. A clear metallicity trend and a dominant single age population are found.

We have obtained new CCD photometry for a sample of ≃ 800 early-type galaxies (dwarf and giant ellipticals) in the central 700 arcmin of the Coma cluster, complete in color and in magnitude to R = 22.5 mag (MR ≃ −12 mag for H0 = 86 km/sec/Mpc). The composite luminosity function for all galaxies in the cluster core (excluding NGC 4874 and NGC 4889) is modeled as the sum of a Gaussian distributio...

The Age and Metallicity Range of Early-Type Galaxies in Clusters

We present an unbiased method for evaluating the ranges of ages and metallicities which are allowed by the photometric properties of the stellar populations that dominate the light of early-type galaxies in clusters. The method is based on the analysis of morphologically-classified early-type galaxies in 17 clusters at redshifts 0.3 ∼< z ∼< 0.9 and in the nearby Coma cluster using recent stella...

The Nature of E+a Galaxies in Intermediate Redshift Clusters

Combining HST/WFPC2 mosaics with extensive ground-based spectroscopy, we study the nature of E+A galaxies in three intermediate redshift clusters (z = 0.33, 0.58, & 0.83). From a sample of ∼ 500 confirmed cluster members, we isolate 46 E+A candidates to determine the E+A fraction and study their physical properties. Spectral types are assigned using Balmer (Hδ, Hγ, Hβ) and [OII] λ3727 equivalen...

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: the luminosity function of cluster galaxies

We have determined the composite luminosity function (LF) for galaxies in 60 clusters from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. The LF spans the range −22.5 < MbJ < −15, and is well fitted by a Schechter function with MbJ = −20.07 ± 0.07 and α = −1.28 ± 0.03 (H 0 = 100 km s−1 Mpc−1, M = 0.3, = 0.7). It differs significantly from the field LF, having a characteristic magnitude that is approximately 0...
